Hazard Martial Arts Club offers legitimate training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Mixed Martial Arts.  We stray away from the "belt factory" mentality that has corrupted the martial arts as we know it today.  You will learn effective standing and ground grappling skills that will give you a better chance of surviving an attack.  Gracie style jiu jitsu has been proven time and time again as the most effective form of self defense ever devised.

Proven effective in:
  • Vale Tudo "no rules fights" in the streets of Brazil
  • UFC
  • U.S. Army-official hand to hand combat system
  • Law enforcement
Gracie Jiu Jitsu was built on principles of leverage.  There are no limits to what you can do on the street, so training has to be as realistic as possible. Students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu utilize free grappling, or "rolling", to refine their skills in class.  Grappling is very demanding at first, but it then becomes second nature.  This is what separates BJJ from other martial arts.  Instead of memorizing countless wrist locks, kicks, strikes, and katas, you will spend countless hours on the grappling mat building real strength and endurance that will give you a better chance of surviving a real attack.  Students develop instinctive reactions to their opponents actions, which equals real defense, and not offense disguised as defense.

A good example is one step sparring, which is found in many styles of karate.  After learning a certain number of one step techniques and katas, you can advance high in belt rankings by only displaying your techniques to the teacher, and of course, paying the rank promotion fee.  You've seen this play out before, the opponent throws a punch, you step back with the right foot, execute a back fist, and your opponent falls to the ground helpless.  This is the idea, but it is only that, and idea.  This may work in the perfect situation.  But what if your opponent doesn't throw a punch, and instead you are tackled to the ground.  What are you to do now?  Come to our classes and find out, it's on us!  Stop by anytime and train for one week absolutely free.  If you don't feel that we offer true self defense for a real attack then you can leave with no obligations.
